It is evident that the current state of the local government in Nigeria is not working for the benefits of the grassroots. Designed to be the third tier of government, the local government system is intended to bring governance closer to the people and address their specific needs. However, due to the greed and overbearing attitude of governors, this goal has not been achieved. The recent final approvals of both arms of the National Assembly to give full financial autonomy to the 774 local governments is a step in the right direction towards better management and efficient governance at the grassroots level.
The move to grant full financial autonomy to the local governments is long overdue. Currently, most local governments in Nigeria are heavily dependent on state governments for funding, which often leads to mismanagement and lack of accountability. By granting financial autonomy, the local governments will have more control over their resources and be able to better serve the needs of their communities.
However, for this autonomy to be fully effective, it is crucial that state houses of assembly also give their assent to the bill, as required by the constitution. Unfortunately, it is expected that state governments may not easily relinquish their control over local government finances, as this would reduce their influence and power. As such, it is imperative that citizens take a stand and demand that their representatives support this bill for the greater good of the people.
In order to push for the implementation of full financial autonomy for local governments, citizens must take action. One way to do this is by calling for the recall of any assembly members who do not support the bill within the next 30 days. This would send a strong message to the state governments that the people are serious about improving governance at the grassroots level and empowering local governments to better serve their communities.
It is important for citizens to come together and advocate for this change. By standing united, we can ensure that the third tier of government in Nigeria functions effectively and that quality leadership is enthroned in various local governments. It is time to put an end to the undemocratic practices of state governments appointing local government officials and instead allow for true democracy to flourish at the grassroots level.
In order to move our country forward and create a system of governance that truly benefits the people, we must all join hands and demand for the implementation of full financial autonomy for local governments. This will not only empower local governments to better serve their communities, but also promote transparency, accountability, and good governance at all levels of government.
I call on all good citizens of Nigeria to join us in this noble cause. Let us come together and demand for the implementation of full financial autonomy for local governments within the next 30 days. By taking a stand and holding our representatives accountable, we can help shape a brighter future for our country and ensure that the needs of the grassroots are met.
